The Next Full Moon

Is on September 14th, 2023 and offers a rare combination of lunar events. It will be a partial lunar eclipse, a supermoon, the Corn Moon, and the Harvest Moon. This is a spectacular celestial event that won't be seen again until 2033.

Partial Lunar Eclipse

During this type of eclipse, the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the Sun's direct rays from reaching the Moon. The portion of the Moon that lies within the Earth's shadow will appear dark, while the rest of the Moon will remain illuminated. This is not to be confused with a total lunar eclipse during which the entire Moon would be in the Earth's shadow.

Supermoon

A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth during its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual. The technical term is perigee.

Corn Moon

This is a name given to the full moon of September by Native Americans, as it coincides with the time when corn is harvested.

Harvest Moon

This is a name given to the full moon of September or October, as it rises around the time of the autumn equinox, providing extra light for farmers to harvest their crops.

All About Lunar Eclipses

Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the Sun's rays from reaching the Moon. This can only happen during a full moon, when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun.

There are three types of lunar eclipses: total, partial, and penumbral.

Total lunar eclipses occur when the entire Moon passes through the Earth's shadow.

Partial lunar eclipses occur when only part of the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow.

Penumbral lunar eclipses occur when the Moon passes through the Earth's penumbral shadow, which is the outer part of the Earth's shadow.

Lunar eclipses are relatively common, occurring about twice a year. However, total lunar eclipses are much rarer, occurring only about once every two or three years.

A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at its closest point to the Earth during its orbit. This makes the Moon appear larger and brighter than usual. Supermoons are not as rare as lunar eclipses, but they are still a beautiful sight to behold.
