Early Life and Career
Bernie Sanders was born in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from college, he worked as a freelance journalist and community organizer. In 1971, he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont, a position he held for four terms.
Political Career
In 1990, Sanders was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for 16 years. In 2006, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he currently serves.
Sanders is a self-described democratic socialist. He is known for his progressive views on issues such as healthcare, education, and climate change.
2020 Presidential Campaign
In 2019, Sanders announced his candidacy for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. He ran on a platform of economic equality, social justice, and environmental protection.
Sanders won the popular vote in several primary and caucus contests, but ultimately lost the nomination to Joe Biden.
