4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Los Angeles

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake rattled Los Angeles on Monday, centered within the city limits. The quake was followed by a 2.1-magnitude aftershock just two minutes later, and was felt more than 100 miles away in Bakersfield and San Diego.

Additional Earthquakes in California and Nevada

In addition to the earthquake in Los Angeles, several other earthquakes have been reported in California and Nevada in recent days. These include:

  • A magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Ridgecrest, California on Monday
  • A magnitude 3.2 earthquake near Bishop, California on Tuesday
  • A magnitude 2.7 earthquake near Gardnerville, Nevada on Wednesday

While these earthquakes were smaller in magnitude than the one in Los Angeles, they are still a reminder of the seismic activity that is common in this region.

What to Do During an Earthquake

If you are in an earthquake, there are several things you should do to protect yourself:

  • Drop to the ground, take cover under a table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops
  • Stay away from windows, outside doors, and walls
  • If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stop
  • Do not use elevators

After an earthquake, be sure to check for injuries and damage. If you see any downed power lines or damaged buildings, stay away and report them to the authorities.
